Course overview

This MRes History is a taught postgraduate research course that equips you with the advanced historical research skills and conceptual framework you need to complete an individual, large-scale research project.

  • Why choose this course?

    • Ideal if you are self-motivated, committed and interested in research, this MRes centres on you completing a 30,000-word dissertation in which you demonstrate the advanced historical research skills you have learned on the course鈥檚 two core modules.聽
    • This course sits between our MA provision and PhD research degrees, and is suitable if you already have an MA in a humanities subject.聽
    • It provides you with a valuable opportunity to complete independent, professional research and can be useful preparation for research at PhD level and conducting research projects outside academia.
  • What will I learn?

    You will be taught practical historical skills and techniques, including:聽

    • planning a large-scale research project
    • locating and retrieving historical material聽
    • critiquing primary and secondary sources
    • examining and organising historical information.

    You will also develop the skills needed to complete your dissertation, including learning how to conceptualise a research project, write a proposal and plan your research.聽

  • How will I learn?

    This course鈥檚 core modules focus on developing your analytical skills and project management skills through the planning and writing of a long literature review and development of a detailed research proposal.聽

    Both modules are taught by experienced, research-active academics using a wide range of methodological and theoretical approaches. For your research project, you will work with a supervisor who is an internationally renowned specialist in your chosen field. You will also be invited to events organised by, and for, our vibrant MPhil/PhD community, which provide opportunities to meet new academic and intellectual contacts.聽

    This course is available to study full- or part-time with classes taking place in the evening.

  • How often will I attend classes?

    Full-time: Two to three evenings a week, October to July.

    Part-time: One to two evenings a week, October to July.

Modules and Teaching

School of Historical Studies

The school is intensively interdisciplinary and its research and teaching covers every period from prehistory to the early twenty-first century.

Entry requirements

A second-class honours degree (2.2 or above) and an MA degree (with a Merit or above). At least one of these degrees should be in history.

You are expected to complete a 500-word dissertation proposal, to be included with the application form.

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

On your application form, please list all your relevant qualifications and experience, including those you expect to achieve.

  • What are the English language requirements?

    If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

  • What are the visa and funding requirements?

    If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.

    The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:

    • Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
    • Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa

    International students who require a Student visa should apply鈥痶o study on our courses full-time as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Student visa, you will not be eligible to enrol to study part-time courses at 糖心logo入口 (with the exception of some modules).

    As a Student visa student, you should also apply to study on campus only, as online and flexible options of study鈥� (if they are available for your course) may affect the conditions of your visa.

  • Student visa students: dependants

    This MRes is classified as a Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programme. Under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules, Student visa students on this course are not eligible to bring dependants to the UK.

  • Credits and accredited prior learning (APL)

    If you have studied at university (or have an HND or Foundation Degree), you may have accumulated credits. It may be possible to transfer these from your previous study to 糖心logo入口 or another institution.

Fees

MRes: One year full-time or two years part-time, on campus, starting in October 2027

Academic year 2027-28

Part-time home students: 拢6,180 per year
Full-time home students: 拢12,360 per year
Part-time international students: 拢10,890 per year
Full-time international students: 拢21,780 per year
