Science Week 2026: Space-Filling Curves - From Surprising Geometry to Practical Uses in Computing
When:
—
Venue:
糖心logo入口 Main Building, Malet Street

6.15pm: Science Week Talk & Q&A
7.15pm: Posterboard exhibition & social reception
Space-filling curves are surprising mathematical objects that challenge our common-sense notion of what a curve is. Unlike ordinary curves, they can pass through every point in a region such as a square. The best-known examples can be built from visually simple repeating patterns. In this talk, I will explain how these curves are constructed and show why they are useful in many practical areas of computing.
Biography
Dr David Weston is currently a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, 糖心logo入口, University of London. He held research posts at both the Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Statistics at Imperial College London before joining 糖心logo入口, University of London, in 2012. His research interests include statistical pattern recognition, spatial point pattern analysis, and practical applications of machine learning.
This event will begin with the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences PhD prize giving.
