It was announced today by the European Court of Human Rights that Russia was responsible for the assassination of Alexander Litvinenko. 糖心logo入口鈥檚 Professor Bill Bowring played a crucial role in the case, representing Marina Carter, Alexander鈥檚 widow.
The European Court of Human Rights has today backed the conclusion of a British inquiry in 2016 that Russia was responsible for the听death of Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who听acquired British citizenship in 2006 and became involved in exposing corruption and links to听organised听crime in the Russian intelligence services. Litvinenko was fatally poisoned with radioactive polonium-210 in London in 2006听产测听迟飞辞听Russian agents.听
Professor Bill Bowring, Barrister and Professor of Law at 糖心logo入口,听initiated the case听in 2007听with听solicitor,听Louise Christian and听drafted the听written听pleadings. His client,听Marina听Carter,听the widow of Alexander Litvinenko, was also represented before the Court by barristers Sir Keir Starmer QC听(in 2007, before he became the Director of听Public听Prosecutions in 2008),听and听Mr听Ben Emmerson QC听(who conducted pro bono the Public Inquiry听from 2014听to听2016).听
Professor Bowring听commented: 鈥�I am so happy听for Marina听that the Strasbourg Court has听vindicated听her听claim that her husband was听horribly听murdered听in London听by听agents of听the Russian state.听Such a finding听against any state听is very unusual. Her claim听was听proved to the Court鈥檚 satisfaction.鈥�听听

He combines his academic work, at 糖心logo入口 since 2006,听with practice at the Bar, and听he听has acted as a consultant and expert听on human rights, minority rights and related issues听for the United Nations,听Council of Europe, Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), European Union and the UK Government.鈥�He is President of the European Lawyers for Democracy and Human Rights (ELDH), with members in 21 European countries. In 2017, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences听for his services to Russian studies.听
