    Research overview

    The cytoskeleton is essential for many cellular processes including cell division, motility, definition of cell architecture and differentiation.

    Part of our current research is focused on understanding microtubule organisation and dynamics, and how these properties are harnessed for the life and health of cells. Microtubule regulation and organisation by a plethora of proteins is adapted to different functional contexts. We use a combination of biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to elucidate the mechanisms by which kinesin motors and microtubule associated proteins interact with and regulate microtubules.

    Another strand of our research is focused on the actin cytoskeleton and the Arp2/3 complex which is essential for stimulating dynamic branched actin networks in multiple cellular processes. Funded by an ERC Synergy grant in collaboration with Dr Michael Way (The Francis Crick Institute, London, UK) and Dr Edgar Gomes (Institute of Molecular Medicine, Lisbon, Portugal), we are exploring the mechanisms of Arp2/3 isoform complexes at molecular, cellular and physiological hierarchies of organisation, with a particular focus on muscle development, function and disease.

    Abstract

    Funded by the BBSRC and in collaboration with Professor Rita Tewari (Nottingham University, UK), we are examining the roles and molecular properties of kinesin motor proteins in the malaria parasite.
