    Biography

    Prior to joining ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú in 2015, I worked at the University of Essex (2007-2015), Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (2005-2007), Central European University in Budapest (1999-2004) and University of Novi Sad in Serbia (1993-1999). I also worked on numerous EAP and ESP projects in Hungary, Russia, Serbia and Turkey as an academic writing and English language teacher, course designer and materials developer.

    I have served as Book Review and Associate Editor for the Journal of English for Academic Purposes, as Deputy Chair and Board member of the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing (EATAW), the leader of the ‘Academic Literacies’ research team within the ‘European Literacy Network’ COST (European Cooperation in Science & Technology) Action IS140, and was one of the founding members of the Professional, Academic and Work-Based Literacies (now Literacies) SIG within BAAL.

    Research interests

    • L2/multilingual students’ academic literacy practices and experiences, particularly their citation practices, source use, writer voice, disciplinary socialisation and interdisciplinarity;
    • Developmental perspectives on students’ writing and writing pedagogy;
    • Historical studies of academic genres and textual features
    • Writing for local/international publication by multilingual scholars
    • The ways in which the institutional, social, historical and political contexts of writing and issues of self- and other-positioning affect writers and shape their texts.

    I welcome enquiries from prospective PhD students who are interested in undertaking research in any of my areas of research interest. I particularly welcome proposals for PhD projects in the following areas:

    • L2/Multilingual academic literacies, particularly source use and citing
    • L2/Multilingual writer voice and identity
    • Ethnographically-oriented studies of writing for international publication
    • Case studies of multilingual writers
    • Written academic discourse (genre analysis of student and published writing, cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural studies)
    • EAP/ESP (teachers, students, materials)

    I have supervised 10 doctoral projects to completion. Recently completed doctoral studies under my supervision include:

    • Science in exile: EAL academic literacies development of established Syrian academics 
    • Emotions and motivation in context: A multiple case study of high school students learning Enlish as a foreign language in Romania 
    • A cross-cultural comparison of evaluation in classical concert reviews in British and Hong Kong newspapers
    • Written corrective feedback at a Saudi university: English language teachers' beliefs, students' preferences, and teachers' practices 
    • A comparative genre analysis of English and Arabic research article introductions in the field of education: Textual features, writers' perspectives, and writing contexts
