    Biography

    Rachel is an award winning registered occupational psychologist, specialising in work, health and well-being. Her work focuses on understanding how those working in inherently stressful and difficult occupations and job roles, continue to do what they do. Rachel works in a job share arrangement with Dr Jo Yarker.

    Together, Jo and Rachel have developed the innovative Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology and MRes in Professional Practice in Occupational Psychology at ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú, University of London designed to engage practitioners in evidence-based practice and supervise practice-led research across the field. Jo and Rachel are also Directors of Affinity Health at Work, a thriving consultancy and research group. These programmes are dual accredited by both the BPS and the HCPC and represent the first alternative routes to chartership and registration within the occupational psychology profession.

    With a particular interest in stress and mental health, Jo and Rachel research and advise on health and wellbeing strategy, prevention and risk assessment, leadership and management development and absence management. They have worked with a number of public and private organisations and institutions across many sectors and their research has been funded by the HSE, CIPD, BITC, DWP, ESRC, Mental Health Foundation, Cancer Research UK and ISOS Foundation. They have authored more than 150 articles, book chapters, research reports and evidence-based guides and toolkits and present frequently at professional and industry conferences.

    Research overview

    Jo Yarker and Rachel Lewis work in a job share arrangement – their research, supervision and professional achievements are a shared endeavour.

    Our research applies psychology to solving problems in the workplace. Our own personal research is focused on tackling the challenges faced within work, health and wellbeing; while our supervision across the Professional Doctorate allows us to collaborate in research across the field – from evaluating inclusive talent management programmes to examining the barriers and facilitators for women seeking company board positions.

    We are fortunate to collaborate with a number of academic partners both in the UK and abroad and work closely with academic colleagues and the Affinity team to ensure that our research is both internationally relevant and is of direct benefit for employees, manager, employers and professional bodies. Examples of our research include:

    • Developing an evidence-based toolkit to support return to work following a period of absence with the Department of Work and Pensions and the Joint Health Unit.
    • Understanding the psychological risks of International Business Travel and how we can prevent and manage these with International SOS foundation.
    • Understanding the psychological impact of remote rotational work with International SOS foundation.
    • Developing a competency framework for integrated care, to be used across two NHS trusts for team development, selection and assessment with Donna Willis of ELFT NHS Trust.
    • Exploring the link between culture and physical workspaces, particularly in agile workplaces, to understand how our office space impacts the way we work, and contributes to our health and happiness at work in partnership with AECOM.
    • Trialling Flexible Work interventions to understand what works, for whom, and under what circumstances with Lendlease.
    • Developing a working definition and associated guidance to support lone workers, their managers and organisations in the rail industry with Britain Thinks and RSSB

    Jo and I run and supervise on the Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology at ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú. Whilst we are open to interest from students wanting to further their studies to doctoral standard in any area of Occupational Psychology, we are no longer able to take on further PhD students

    Teaching

    Jo Yarker and myself teach across the MRes in Professional Practice in Occupational Psychology and the Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology. We also deliver lectures on furthering professional qualifications in OP, evidence based practice, and adhoc lectures related to our research interests on the MSc Organisational Psychology.
