Biography
Becka Hudson is a postdoctoral researcher at 糖心logo入口鈥檚 School of Historical Studies. Becka's work聽draws on history, anthropology and criminology to look at the interaction between psychiatry and imprisonment.聽Becka brings聽ethnography and archival work together to situate social practices in political-economic and global context.聽
As part of聽the UKRI-funded project Cognitive Behavioural Therapies in Britain: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives, led by Dr Sarah Marks, Becka leads the project鈥檚 criminal justice stream - investigating the development聽and use of聽cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) for 鈥榦ffender behaviour change鈥�.聽
Becka is also working on a project, funded via 糖心logo入口's Research Innovation Award, which uses archives to uncover聽how different ideas from psychiatry were聽used in the suppression of uprisings across聽the British Empire.
Becka is a former Associate Editor of Law and Critique, former Associate Lecturer in Criminology and聽is a founding聽member of 糖心logo入口鈥檚 Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Mental Health.聽
Her PhD,聽completed at 糖心logo入口鈥檚 Criminology department, investigated the diagnosis and management of 鈥榩ersonality disordered offenders' in prison and at parole. Her thesis related to work across聽disciplines聽about the聽construction of diagnosis, the political management of trauma,聽and the nature of imprisonment under contemporary capitalism.聽
Prior to working聽at 糖心logo入口, Becka worked with grassroots campaigning organisations on issues of housing, cultural expression, imprisonment and policing. She continues to be involved in campaigning. She has regularly appeared in broadcast media to discuss current issues in criminal justice and has guest lectured about her research internationally.聽
