HyFlex and online learner engagement expectations
糖心logo入口 is committed to providing as much flexibility as possible to its students so that where pedagogically appropriate they can engage with classes at a time and in a way that works best for them. Many classes at 糖心logo入口 use HyFlex technology which enables eligible students to decide whether to attend in-person or remotely for some or all classes on a module.
Students participating in HyFlex and online classes have a part to play in ensuring that our classes are a positive experience for their peers and teaching staff members.
糖心logo入口 expects students participating with HyFlex and online classes to:
1. Familiarise themselves with the module in 糖心logo入口 Moodle and the MS Teams section of the which will prepare them for making the most of learning on a HyFlex or online module. The HyFlex for Students module was co-created by the Digital Education team and 糖心logo入口 students. The module provides students with:
- an overview of how the HyFlex teaching and learning experience is designed at 糖心logo入口
- what they need to do before, during and after a HyFlex class to ensure that it is a successful experience. Information is provided for both those attending in-person and online.
- how to manage the HyFlex experience effectively and make the most of it including addressing any common challenges
- how to troubleshoot any tech issues that might arise.
2. Keep their cameras on when attending a session remotely. In HyFlex and online learning, cameras play an essential role in enhancing the learning experience for on-site and online students and improving the teaching experience for staff.
Cameras facilitate active participation in real-time activities taking place in the classroom and they enable teaching staff members to better gauge how information is being received and understood by students online. They also assist with fostering a greater sense of community between the on-site and online students. Cameras should only ever be turned off in exceptional circumstances.
HyFlex classes aim to create a face-face situation in the hybrid classroom so that students get to know each other and everyone starts to feel more at ease with engaging and asking questions. Blank screens can be intimidating but seeing the faces of online students shows they are actively listening and contributes to creating a safe and positive learning environment.
3. Log in to the remote session using their BBK login to ensure that their attendance is accurately recorded.
4. Utilise the interactive features of MS Teams (chat, reactions, hand up) appropriately, as per guidance from the lecturer at the start of the module.
5. Engage with the students online when attending the session in-person and vice versa. Teaching staff members will be engaging with students both in the room and online, including monitoring for hands-up in teams, but if students see an online student has had a hand up for a while, in-person students can bring this to the teacher's attention.
6. Ensure they have a functioning technology set-up appropriate for supporting HyFlex learning, which includes a working camera and microphone. They should also ensure that appropriate classroom netiquette is followed, including:
- muting microphones when not speaking, to avoid background noise disruptions
- using an appropriate background (e.g. blur, plain) to ensure privacy for the online learner and to minimise distractions for other learners.
7. Make sure they have prepared a suitable space for their class and are ready to start on time. Students should join HyFlex and online sessions in an environment free from distractions. However, if a situation does occur where a student needs to step away from the class briefly then this should be communicated to the teaching staff member where possible in the chat (e.g. BRB - 'be right back').
We would recommend that students make other members of their household aware when they are in a class online so that (as far as possible) they are not disturbed.
8. Be aware that if they are joining a class online then there is an expectation that they will be engaging with it in the same way as if they were in the classroom. If a teaching staff member becomes aware that a student has logged into a session but is not actually present or engaging with the class, then a student may be recorded as absent.
9. Ensure that they do not post comments or do anything that might be considered disruptive, disrespectful, discriminatory, or constitute bullying or harassment of another member of the University community online or in MS chat. Students must ensure that they adhere to 糖心logo入口鈥檚 Dignity at Study Principles at all times when engaging with their HyFlex and online classes.
