    Biography

    Dr George Magoulas is聽Professor of Computer Science at 糖心logo入口's聽School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, and Director of the 糖心logo入口 Knowledge Lab, University of London.聽 The Knowledge Lab pursues research on digital technologies,聽digital information and artificial intelligence and investigates how developments in these areas are transforming the way people learn, work and communicate.

    Before starting his academic career in 1998, George聽held R&D positions in the cement and automotive industries working on embedded systems that integrated fuzzy logic and neural network components (kiln control, multiloop and multivariable control, automotive engine idle speed control).聽

    Promoting and monitoring teaching and learning quality and educational practice has been a significant part of George's work for more than 15 years. He has served as of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses for several Colleges of the University of London, and for other Universities in the UK and abroad. In 2011, George led the British Computer Society accreditation of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Department, and between 2010 and 2022, he was Chair of the Postgraduate Programmes Exam Board.聽He served聽as Director of Teaching & Learning Quality for the Computer Science Dept. between 2016 and 2023.

    George holds a BEng/MEng (Systems & Control Engineering), a PhD (Nonlinear optimisation algorithms for neural networks learning), and a PGCE in Teaching and Learning (Higher Education).聽

    Research overview

    I conduct fundamental research in machine intelligence, focusing on the development of learning algorithms, computational frameworks, and architectures for intelligent systems. My work also explores the design of safe artificial general intelligence. It applies these research advances to achieve real-world impact.聽Current applications of my work are in intelligent systems for psychophysiological data modelling and classification (neurodegenerative diseases, ASD), and in intelligent environments (AI in education, learning technologies, autonomous AI systems for services management and systems integration).

    Breaking cycles of violence

    Abstract

    Universally condemned, violent dynamics continue to permeate humanity: from online grooming to schoolyard bullying; from abuse at home to rape on the street; from acts of terror to acts of war. Be them intimate relationships, social factions, or international relations, no sphere in human societies is free from violent acts. Whilst it is a truism that 鈥渧iolence just begets more violence鈥, there is no obvious answer to the question of what can stop cycles of violence.聽In particular, we are motivated by the following questions:
    - What are early predictors or implicit aspects of violent events 鈥 possibly at stages when the very existence of evolving violence is unknown even to the human agents themselves involved in it?
    - What capacities or skills are required, in turn, to withstand or disrupt cycles of violence?
    - What can in-depth empirical approaches, such as phenomenological, psychosocial, or AI-informed socio-computational analysis, contribute to the understanding of cycles of violence?

    The project is led by ,聽School of Psychology & Counselling at The Open University, and our work aims to analyse quantitative data generated from Stanley Milgram鈥檚 鈥淥bedience to authority鈥 experiments, design computational models based on artificial intelligence methods and machine learning, and use transfer learning methods聽on novel datasets representing violent phenomena.

    Outcomes

    鈥 Design and implementation of an exploratory data analysis and machine learning pipeline and relevant models to address the research questions.
    鈥 Transfer learning methods that allow transferring models and聽findings聽to areas where violent phenomena appear as naturally as the starry sky, such as social media, the police, or forensic psychotherapy.

    I am open to inquiries from prospective PhD students (self-funded PhD) who are keen on researching machine intelligence, learning algorithms and intelligent architectures, neural networks and deep learning, and artificial general intelligence safety. I have successfully supervised 12 PhD students to date. My current research applications include psychophysiological data modelling and classification (neurodegenerative diseases, ASD), the design of intelligent systems for systems management, and learning technologies.     Teaching

    I have taught both students since 1998. As module convenor, I currently teach "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning" (undergraduate), and "Neural Networks and Deep Learning" (postgraduate). Additionally, I am the module convenor of the MSc Advanced Computing Project, the MSc Computer Science Project, the MSc Data Science Project, the MSc Applied Statistics Project, and the PG Cert Applied Data Science Project, coordinating the entire process and delivering lectures.
